You think it causes a lot of trouble to replace and maintain servers to reduce CO2emissions? Or, you think the number of servers you can replace is small so you can expect little effect from the replacement? There is a way to achieve a sizable reduction in CO2 emissions without much hassle or large scale updates.

How about replacing rack servers for services that don't cause much load, like DHCP or DNS with a MicroServer. That way, without any loss in service, you can reduce the yearly CO2 emissions of your server by 90.8%! (Compared to our own brand low energy server; see graphic).

For single purpose servers (DNS, DHCP, NTP, logging), IA rack servers with top processors are overkill, and with their high energy consumption they cause a large amount of CO2 emissions in the long run.

For this kind of server, a compact low energy micro server with 8.0 W energy consumption during operation can achieve a 90.8% reduction in energy consumption and thus CO2 emissions with a small one-time investment.
Over a year, this adds up to a saved 385.2 kg CO2 emissions.

"Place anywhere" and "stable long term operation"

Without openings or moving parts, the OpenBlockS offers durability and environment resistance, even outside of the cooled server room, in a corner of the office or under the floor. Placed anywhere, it maintains stable operation for years. As a result, ressources needed for spare parts and maintenance are greatly reduced. Together with the low energy consumption, this leads to greatly reduced total cost of ownership.

Flexible, durable, maintenance free

Features

The OpenBlockS is a compact embedded linux server, created for appliances and single purpose servers. With selected materials and removing all moving parts, we achieved an energy consumption as low as 8.0 W. The robust design allows for stable operation even in tough environments.

On this page, the following method is used to calculate values for CO2 emissions:
Yearly CO2 emission (kg CO2) = energy consumption (W) * 24 h * 365 days * CO2 emission (0.555 kg CO2/ kWh)
Concerning the CO2 emissions, we use the figure of 0.555 kg CO2/kWh set out by the Environment Ministry in the "Ministerial Ordinance regarding the Calculation of Greenhouse Gas Emission concerning the Business Activities of Specific Emittends" (METI / Environment Ministry directive #3 2006). For details, refer to the law text (Japanese).
